Brakes, which are constantly becoming more technologically advanced, may take their name from a device associated with an earlier mode of transportation. It is thought that the term brake may come from an earlier English word brake, meaning “a bridle or curb,” first recorded in the 16th century. In any case, the first recorded occurrence of our word brake is found in 1772, well before the advent of the automobile.
